Improve Your Posture Starting Today
Amanda Bryan of Amanda Bryan Therapy understands the importance of healthy spinal alignment. Today, she shares a few quick tips that everyone can use starting today to stay comfortable, no matter the activity.
Stand up straight.
Perhaps the most common-sense way to improve your posture is to simply stand up straight. According to Harvard Health Publishing, this is the best way to center your weight and maintain a proper form during all sorts of activities. When you stand tall, your spine can rest in its natural, neutral position. You’ll know you’re standing the right way when your chin is parallel to the floor and your shoulders aren’t slumping forward. Here’s a little fun fact: many of the most popular athletes and celebrities practice good posture. Here’s where you can learn more.
Eliminate stress (and eliminate pain).
Sometimes, our pain and poor posture are the results of being stressed and fatigued. And, believe it or not, stress can actually take a toll on your muscles – Kaiser Permanente explains that one common stress pain is found in the back. If you work from home, look for ways to reduce stress. This might include creating a new storage system for your physical or digital documents, having an ergonomic chair, decluttering your desk and workspace, or hiring a sitter for the kids while you handle important tasks.
You can also reach out to Amanda Bryan Therapy for a massage therapy session (or other services), a sure-fire way to release pent-up stress and walk away with a renewed energy and focus.
Enhance your range of motion.
Good posture isn’t just about standing up straight and being out of pain. Proper posture also helps you ensure that you have great range of motion, and having a good range of motion improves your posture. Aaptiv offers lots of suggestions on exercises that can help improve your overall ability to bend, twist, and reach.
Try chiropractic.
If you get to pay a visit to the office, now’s a great time to schedule an appointment. Chiropractic manipulation can help take pressure off of your spine and make it possible for you to sit in a posture-improving pose. You may also find that your chiropractor can help with other issues, such as menstrual problems, sports injuries, and headaches.
Sleep right.
We all love laying down at night and settling into a cozy and comfortable bed. But, no matter how snug you may be, if you’re sleeping on the wrong type of mattress, pillow, or even in the wrong position, you’re doing your posture a disservice. Sleeping on your side is often the best option, but you’ll want to keep a pillow between your knees to keep your spine aligned. You might also consider visiting a sleep specialist to help you choose the mattress based on your body type and sleep style.
Having proper posture can help you concentrate better at work, enjoy your time with your friends and family more, and live pain-free. Look for ways to reduce stress, which will naturally take tension off your joints and muscles. Also, make sure that you find a chiropractor that’s willing to listen to your concerns and help you work through your physical issues. Finally, don’t forget to stand up straight and tall, just like your mother always said.
